'New Horizons of Cooperation' Between Vietnam and the United States
Vietjet's leadership delegation's visit to the United States from January 8 to January 11, 2025, marked a significant milestone in Vietnam-U.S. relations, not only in aviation but also opening new opportunities in sectors such as technology, finance, and innovation. Notably, Vietjet Madam Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao and the delegation met with U.S. President Donald Trump and numerous international strategic partners, fostering multi-billion-dollar cooperation agreements.
On January 8, Vietjet operated its first flight from Vietnam to the United States, named "Hello America!" This inaugural flight symbolized Vietjet’s official entry into U.S. skies and served as a steppingstone for the airline’s global expansion. Remarkably, this journey utilized a wide-body Airbus A330 aircraft, meeting stringent international safety and security standards. The delegation received a warm welcome at U.S. airports, from Anchorage, Alaska, to Miami, Florida.
This historic flight demonstrated the operational capabilities of Vietnam’s aviation sector, paving the way for new opportunities in bilateral aviation and broader Vietnam-U.S. relations. The successful trip, along with meetings and discussions with U.S. policymakers and business leaders, further promoted investment cooperation and underscored Vietnam’s role as a key trading partner for the U.S. in Southeast Asia, the Asia-Pacific, and globally.
The proactive efforts of Vietnamese businesses and entrepreneurs were highly regarded by U.S. counterparts, promising to accelerate Vietnam’s development in this new era of growth. This milestone also enhances aviation connectivity, facilitates tourism and trade development, and fosters collaboration with leading technology partners in artificial intelligence (AI), digital transformation, big data, and aerospace, generating jobs and revenue for industries in both countries.
Madam Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao emphasized that this milestone is a crucial step in Vietjet’s international market expansion strategy. It affirms Vietnam’s aviation capabilities on the global stage and creates opportunities for long-term partnerships between the two nations.
Since 2017, Vietjet has established strategic partnerships with major U.S. corporations, such as Boeing, GE, CFM, Pratt & Whitney, and Honeywell, with a total trade value approaching $50 billion. Vietjet’s agreement to purchase 200 Boeing 737 Max aircraft demonstrates its commitment to enhancing service quality and expanding its fleet. In 2025, the first 14 Boeing 737 Max aircraft from this order will be delivered, marking a new chapter in Vietnam-U.S. commercial relations.
Beyond aviation agreements, Vietjet is negotiating partnerships with leading technology corporations like Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Apple, Google, and SpaceX to deploy advanced solutions such as satellite internet on flights and adopt AI, blockchain, and big data in its operations.
During the trip, Madam Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao attended the “Friends of Vietnam Summit” at President-elect Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, engaging with many international partners. This event not only allowed Vietjet to showcase its capabilities but also strengthened Vietnam-U.S. relations across various sectors.
The trip went beyond economic and commercial significance, serving as a cultural bridge and fostering deeper friendship and cooperation between the two nations. Madam Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao exchanged ideas with Donald Trump and U.S. business leaders about strategic partnerships and initiatives to promote balanced trade relations and sustainable economic growth for both countries.
Significantly, Vietjet's leaders also engaged in discussions with billionaire Elon Musk about potential collaborations in technology, highlighting promising prospects for Vietnam-U.S. cooperation in this field.
